Week Thirteen – Halloween in Finland

Last week I celebrated Halloween with my rotary district in Jyvaskyla, this week is the actual Halloween.

In Canada, my family takes Halloween quite seriously, especially my sister, Scarlett. There have been a few years in a row now where her costumes have definitely been over the top.

In Finland, Halloween isn’t much of a holiday, and only the younger generation celebrates it, that being said, its still a new holiday, so there aren’t many houses handing out candy or kids dressing up, and teenagers use it more of an excuse to get drunk with their friends.

I ended up spending Halloween with my host family, and we had a nice little dinner and my host dad brought some candy from the store for us to eat. I enjoyed the time with my family, and it was interesting to have a more relaxed Halloween.
